Fixing

In an engineering context, fixing something means keeping a component in its intended position at all times, either cyclically or permanently.

Guiding

Guiding means keeping something in position and is therefore roughly equivalent to positioning, directing and deflecting. For instance, lateral guide gibs can be used to deflect components on a conveyor belt in order to reposition them.
